Smith married Richard Timney (born 1963 in Ealing, London) in October 1987 in Malvern, Worcestershire, and they have two sons. In June 2008 the Independent newspaper reported that she was a season-ticket holder at Aston Villa Football Club.
In December 2008, Timney was discovered to have written a series of letters praising the work of Smith which were sent to newspapers; however, he had failed to disclose that he was her husband and managing her constituency office.
