After Retirement
In 1956, Cowie made his debut as a Test umpire; he officiated in a total of three Test matches. In addition, Cowie played professional soccer in the winter, acting as goalkeeper for Auckland for 14 seasons. He later served on the New Zealand Football governing body. He was awarded the OBE in 1972.
