Governor
Johnson was sworn in as the fourth governor of California on January 9, 1856. Taking office at age of 30, Johnson remains the youngest to have done so in California history. Upon assuming the office, Johnson inherited a growing state debt left over from the Bigler administration. Johnson sought nearly immediately to reduce government expenditures in the hope of cutting the debt.
