Itineris Early College High School is an Independent Public Charter school that was first opened in 2004. It is located in West Jordan, Utah, USA, on the campus of Salt Lake Community College. The school enables those who attend to receive their associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma at the same time. Itineris Early College has a wide variety of courses ranging from the sciences and mathematics to English and history. In junction with Salt Lake Community College, Itineris also has classes taught outside the campus that will help students achieve enough credits to receive their associate's degree in biotechnology or general studies. The school blends a college and high school lifestyle in that there is an easy transition from high school to college in two years with the support of friends, family and administration.
Itineris Early College High School is a new kind of institution that blends high school and college into a coherent educational program. It is designed so that all students can achieve up to two years of college credit at the same time as they are earning a high school diploma.
Itineris Early College High School shares similar characteristics of other Early College High Schools that have been shown to improve learning and academic success for students.
These characteristics include:
- Being located on or near college campus
- Operating within a mature learning environment
- Offering a rigorous curriculum
- Pursuing college credit within an accredited college degree-granting program
Currently, there are more than twenty Early College High Schools nationwide in the US. The Jobs for the Future Early College High School Initiative, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Ford Foundation, and The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, has awarded more than $50 million in grant money to support approximately 100 new schools over the next five years.
Famous quotes containing the words early, college, high and/or school:
“Betwixt the black fronts long-withdrawn
A light-blue lane of early dawn,”
—Alfred Tennyson (18091892)
“I never went near the Wellesley College chapel in my four years there, but I am still amazed at the amount of Christian charity that school stuck us all with, a kind of glazed politeness in the face of boredom and stupidity. Tolerance, in the worst sense of the word.... How marvelous it would have been to go to a womens college that encouraged impoliteness, that rewarded aggression, that encouraged argument.”
—Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
“Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in
their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet,
with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.”
—Bible: Hebrew Second Samuel (l. I, 2325)
“I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil,to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than as a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of that.”
—Henry David David (18171862)
