Girls Cross Country and Track and Field
The girls cross country and track & field teams have achieved a level of excellence over the past decade paralleled by no team in the state. Under Coach Mike Parker, the Iowa City West Girls Track & Field teams have won 6 State Championship team titles, the 3rd most in state history. They have also won 10 Regional Championship team titles, more than any school in class 4A in the last 13 years. The Iowa City West girls cross country team has won 5 State Championship team titles. Coach Parker has been recognized by his peers at the highest level having been selected the Iowa High School State Coach of the Year or the At-Large Coach of the Year 19 times by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches. The Mississippi Valley Conference coaches have selected Parker as the M.V.C Coach of the Year 17 times. In 2004 he became the first coach in Class 4A state history to be voted both the Girls Track & Field State Coach of the Year and the Girls Cross Country State Coach of the Year both in the same calendar year. Parker has three times been nominated for the National Federation of High Schools National Coach of the Year award, in 2008 & 2009 for track & field and in 2004 for cross country.

Famous quotes containing the words girls, cross, country, track and/or field:
“A village seems thus, where its able-bodied men are all plowing the ocean together, as a common field. In North Truro the women and girls may sit at their doors, and see where their husbands and brothers are harvesting their mackerel fifteen or twenty miles off, on the sea, with hundreds of white harvest wagons, just as in the country the farmers wives sometimes see their husbands working in a distant hillside field. But the sound of no dinner-horn can reach the fishers ear.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Life is a bridge. Cross over it, but build no house on it.”
—Indian proverb, quoted in Bruce Chatwin, The Songlines, ch. 30, From the Notebooks (1987)
“In Spain, the dead are more alive than the dead of any other country in the world.”
—Federico García Lorca (18981936)
“The most difficult crime to track is the one which is purposeless.”
—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (18591930)
“My prime of youth is but a frost of cares,
My feast of joy is but a dish of pain,
My crop of corn is but a field of tares,
And all my good is but vain hope of gain:
The day is past, and yet I saw no sun,
And now I live, and now my life is done.”
—Chidiock Tichborne (15581586)
