Inverness is located at 42°6′47″N 88°5′54″W / 42.11306°N 88.09833°W / 42.11306; -88.09833 (42.113275, -88.098433).

According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 6.70 square miles (17.4 km2), of which 6.54 square miles (16.9 km2) (or 97.61%) is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km2) (or 2.39%) is water.

The village borders are defined by Barrington Rd to the west, Roselle Rd to the east, Algonquin Rd to the south, and Dundee Rd to the north.
