“A world of made
is not a world of born-”
—E.E. (Edward Estlin)
“The sun was like a great visiting presence that stimulated and took its due from all animal energy. When it flung wide its cloak and stepped down over the edge of the fields at evening, it left behind it a spent and exhausted world.”
—Willa Cather (18731947)
“Our friendships hurry to short and poor conclusions, because we have made them a texture of wine and dreams, instead of the tough fibre of the human heart. The laws of friendship are austere and eternal, of one web with the laws of nature and of morals.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Behind the steering wheel
The boy took out his own forehead.
His girlfriends head was a green bag
Of narcissus stems. OK you win
But meet me anyway at Cohens Drug Store
In 22 minutes.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“It is easy to carp at colleges, and the college, if he will wait for it, will have its own turn. Genius exists there also, but will not answer a call of a committee of the House of Commons. It is rare, precious, eccentric, and darkling.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
