Famous quotes containing the words commission, mathematical and/or instruction:

It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)

What is history? Its beginning is that of the centuries of systematic work devoted to the solution of the enigma of death, so that death itself may eventually be overcome. That is why people write symphonies, and why they discover mathematical infinity and electromagnetic waves.
    Boris Pasternak (1890–1960)

There is in general good reason to suppose that in several respects the gods could all benefit from instruction by us human beings. We humans are—more humane.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
