Insular Plate

The Insular Plate was an ancient oceanic plate that began subducting under the west-coast of North America around the early Cretaceous time. The Insular Plate had a chain of active volcanic islands that were called the Insular Islands. These volcanic Islands however collided then fused onto the west-coast of North America when the Insular Plate jammed then shut down ending the subduction zone.

Famous quotes containing the words insular and/or plate:

They are a curious mixture of Spanish tradition, American imitation, and insular limitation. This explains why they never catch on to themselves.
    Helen Lawrenson (1904–1982)

Then he rang the bell and ordered a ham sandwich. When the maid placed the plate on the table, he deliberately looked away but as soon as the door had shut, he grabbed the sandwich with both hands, immediately soiled his fingers and chin with the hanging margin of fat and, grunting greedily, began to much.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
