The Institute for Cognitive Science Studies (ICSS) (Persian: پژوهشکده علوم شناختی) is a non-governmental institution in Tehran, Iran, committed to providing a research and educational environment that brings together the various disciplines that contribute to cognitive sciences.
In the process of studying cognition, ICSS pursues the following major objectives:
Discovery of important, unknown facts about key issues in cognitive science through quality experiments; understanding unresolved issues in cognitive science through provision of new, effective, analytical theories; identifying means of employing achievements in cognitive science to improve the quality of individual and social wellbeing
The prime interest of ICSS is to conduct research studies that enhance our knowledge and understanding of cognitive science. That objective requires the kind of theoretical, experimental, and applied studies, which would be beneficial not only in terms of employing these achievements in various aspects of life, but also in terms of advancing our scientific knowledge. The institute also adheres to the principle that research findings should be shared with other scientific communities through their publication in respectable peer-reviewed journals and books. To these ends, ICSS engages in a host of other activities. They include:
Offering graduate studies programs
Providing short-term training programs and workshops
Organizing and supporting scientific conferences and discussion meetings
Participating in international collaborations
Publishing (or supporting the publication of) specialized books and journals
Providing an effective research environment by means of modernizing and equipping its laboratories, and maintaining a resourceful library
The institute currently offers PhD and Master's degrees in the field of cognitive neuroscience. Currently, Dr Reza Zamani, a psychologist and previous associate professor of psychology in Tehran University, is the director of the institute.
Famous quotes containing the words institute, cognitive, science and/or studies:
“Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles & organising its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“Creativity becomes more visible when adults try to be more attentive to the cognitive processes of children than to the results they achieve in various fields of doing and understanding.”
—Loris Malaguzzi (20th century)
“My position is a naturalistic one; I see philosophy not as an a priori propaedeutic or groundwork for science, but as continuous with science. I see philosophy and science as in the same boata boat which, to revert to Neuraths figure as I so often do, we can rebuild only at sea while staying afloat in it. There is no external vantage point, no first philosophy.”
—Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)
“These studies which stimulate the young, divert the old, are an ornament in prosperity and a refuge and comfort in adversity; they delight us at home, are no impediment in public life, keep us company at night, in our travels, and whenever we retire to the country.”
—Marcus Tullius Cicero (10643 B.C.)
