Purpose of Marriage
According to the authors of "The State of Affairs", there exists a common belief that a fundamental purpose of marriage is to control sexual partnering (a point that is specifically stated in Christian weddings). Famous quotes containing the words purpose of, purpose and/or marriage:
“Respect is not fear and awe; it...[is]the ability to see a person as he is, to be aware of his unique individuality. Respect, thus, implies the absence of exploitation. I want the loved person to grow and unfold for his own sake, and in his own ways, and not for the purpose of serving me.”
—Erich Fromm (20th century)
“As peace is the end of war, so to be idle is the ultimate purpose of the busy.”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
“We lovd, and we lovd, as long as we could,
Till our love was lovd out in us both;
But our marriage is dead, when the pleasure is fled:
Twas pleasure first made it an oath.”
—John Dryden (16311700)
