Pharmacodynamics
Ibogaine is a tryptamine. Because of the ibogaine molecule's tryptamine core, ibogaine acts as an agonist (binds to the receptor and triggers a response) for the 5-HT2A receptor. However what makes ibogaine's pharmacodynamic properties and subjective experience unique from that of other psychedelic tryptamines and serotonergic psychedelics is that it also acts as an antagonist (blocks agonists' effects) of the NMDA receptor set and for the κ-opioid receptor set.
