In 1988, The Chipettes recorded a cover version for their album The Chipmunks and The Chipettes: Born to Rock. In 1989, The Shadows did an instrumental version on Steppin' to the Shadows. In 1999, a eurodance cover, Dance with Somebody, was recorded by DJ DNA for Dancemania SPEED 3. In 2004, Australian pop artist Nikki Webster covered the song for her album Let's Dance. In 2007, Australian girl group Young Divas included a cover of the song on their second album New Attitude as a bonus track for iTunes. In 2008, Ashley Tisdale covered this single for her EP Degree Girl: OMG! Jams. In 2011, Canadian power pop band These Kids Wear Crowns recorded an electronic pop version on their debut album Jumpstart. The third verse slightly differed. Another version of the These Kids Wear Crowns cover was released in the French language with Brigitte Boisjoli. In 2002, Popstars The Rivals contestant Nadine Coyle performed the song as she competed in the girls final round on 30 November. Her performance received a positive reaction from viewers, whose votes in her favour enabled her to join up with four other females to form the girlband Girls Aloud who are still in existence eight years later and have enjoyed enormous global success. Alexandra Burke (X Factor UK 2008 winner) covered the song on the first live show. In 2008, Michelle Williams made an appearance on Good Morning America performing the song halfway through a performance of "We Break the Dawn". The performance is available on YouTube. In a live concert from Union Chapel former Talking Heads front man David Byrne performed his own "sincere" version. He also performed it for his Live from Austin, Texas album.
The Noisettes performed the song live at Fopp London The song has been performed live several times on American Idol, by Jennifer Fuentes, Elizabeth LeTendre, Tiara Purifoy, and Asia'h Epperson. The song has also been performed live three times on Australian Idol by Cosima De Vito, Emily Williams and Jessica Mauboy. Jessie J performed the song live in 2011. Katy Perry performed the song live in 2011 on her California Dreams Tour. A cappella group Afro-Blue performed the song on the third season of The Sing-Off during the guilty pleasures episode. Shortly after the songs release in 1987, The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu (later to become The KLF) sampled extensively from the song for their composition "Whitney Joins The JAMs". Houston never officially joined The JAMs. Dance act Flip & Fill had a UK Top 20 hit with a pseudo cover of the song in 2003. Their version only uses the chorus but omits the lyrics. In summer 2006, R&B artist Lumidee and Fatman Scoop collaborated and released a song for the FIFA 2006 World Cup soundtrack. The song entitled 'Dance' featured a sample of 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'. German group Royal Gigolos used samples of this and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" to create their 2008 single "Girls Just Wanna Dance". The song is played in a scene of the 2004 film 13 Going on 30.
A version of the song was featured on "So You Think You Can Dance," performed by The Side Project. It was in the fourth season, in 2008, in the first week of competition. The song went on to be featured in 2011 in the fourth season of the Canadian competition, during the third week of the competition. This version was also featured in the week 1 results show for "Dancing With the Stars: All Stars" in an all-pro routine choreographed by Jason Gilkison.
Old Crow Medicine Show, with Ketch Secor performing lead vocals, did a live version of the song at the free tribute concert for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival founder/benefactor Warren Hellman in San Francisco February 19, 2012.
The song is performed by Naya Rivera and Heather Morris (in character as Santana Lopez and Brittany Pierce) on Glee's Whitney Houston tribute episode, "Dance with Somebody".
The pop/rock band Allstar Weekend released a version of the song on February 11, 2012 (ironically the date of Whitney's death) and it appears on their EP "The American Dream" that was released July 3, 2012 on Amazon and July 10, 2012 on iTunes. This version only uses the chorus, the verses and bridge are changed.
