Hove, Actually

People connected to Hove have noted, usually humorously, that it is frequently described as "Brighton – well, Hove, actually" to outsiders unfamiliar with the distinction, and also because local residents wish to distinguish themselves from their less genteel neighbour. One source has identified the locally resident actor Laurence Olivier as the origin of the phrase. In the 1990s the Hove borough council used the slogan "Hove, Actually" to promote the town for tourism.
