Housing Benefit - Abolition of Council Tax Benefit

Abolition of Council Tax Benefit

Council Tax Benefit will be abolished with effect from 31 March 2013 under the Welfare Reform Act. Local Councils will be given powers from April 2013 to operate their own scheme under proposals in the Local Government Bill. The government has stipulated that pensioners claiming council tax benefit will not lose benefit under the new localised system, which means that in effect the current system will continue to apply to pensioners alongside a new localised discount which will replace council tax benefit for working age claimants.

Famous quotes containing the words abolition of, abolition, council, tax and/or benefit:

I am gradually drifting to the opinion that this Rebellion can only be crushed finally by either the execution of all the traitors or the abolition of slavery. Crushed, I mean, so as to remove all danger of its breaking out again in the future.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men. When the majority shall at length vote for the abolition of slavery, it will be because they are indifferent to slavery, or because there is but little slavery left to be abolished by their vote. They will then be the only slaves. Only his vote can hasten the abolition of slavery who asserts his own freedom by his vote.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

Change of fashion is the tax levied by the industry of the poor on the vanity of the rich.
    —Sébastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort (1741–1794)

We do not marry for ourselves, whatever we say; we marry just as much or more for our posterity, for our family. The practice and benefit of marriage concerns our race very far beyond us.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
