History

Their first store opened at the original Muscle Beach location next to the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California, in 1946. They started serving lemonade and hot dog on a stick to people on the beach. Hot Dog on a Stick soon expanded and became a large food chain. Barham later branched into Giant Slides, and the combination of food and entertainment were staples throughout fairs in Southern California. After Dave Barham's death in 1991, the company became an employee-owned corporation. Today, Hot Dog on a Stick is 100% employee owned. Hot Dog on a Stick currently has more than 105 company-owned U.S. locations, which are primarily located in popular regional shopping malls. There are also internationally franchised locations, located in the Philippines and Venezuela. After the death of CEO Fredrica Thode on January 13, 2007, Dan Smith assumed her position.

For the March 19, 2007, episode of Deal or No Deal, host Howie Mandel went to Westside Pavilion in West Los Angeles to find the show's first instant contestant for the show. He eventually selected a long-term employee at the mall's Hot Dog on a Stick location. The woman wore her uniform on the show.
