History
Though there is debate on the subject, the horseshoe sandwich may have been first made by Steve Tomko at the Leland Hotel in Springfield, Illinois, in 1928. Steve Tomko later took the recipe to Waynes Red Coach Inn, where it was served until the late 2000s.
Another theory is that Chef Joe Schweska invented the horseshoe sandwich. Steve Tomko was a 17-year-old dishwasher at the hotel at that time and learned to cook from the chef Joe Schweska.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“All objects, all phases of culture are alive. They have voices. They speak of their history and interrelatedness. And they are all talking at once!”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“I believe that history has shape, order, and meaning; that exceptional men, as much as economic forces, produce change; and that passé abstractions like beauty, nobility, and greatness have a shifting but continuing validity.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“The greatest horrors in the history of mankind are not due to the ambition of the Napoleons or the vengeance of the Agamemnons, but to the doctrinaire philosophers. The theories of the sentimentalist Rousseau inspired the integrity of the passionless Robespierre. The cold-blooded calculations of Karl Marx led to the judicial and business-like operations of the Cheka.”
—Aleister Crowley (18751947)
