Athletics

The Holmdel High School Hornets compete in the Shore Conference, an athletic conference made up of private and public high schools centered at the Northern Jersey Shore. All schools in this conference are located within Monmouth County and Ocean County, and the league operates under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). With 790 students in grades 10-12, the school was classified by the NJSIAA for the 2011-12 school year for most sports as Central Jersey Group II, a category that included schools with enrollment of 516 to 776.

In 2001, the baseball team won the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II state sectional championship, beating Spotswood High School by a score of 7-1.

In 2006, the boys soccer team won the North II Group III state sectional championship, beating Voorhees High School 4-2, before losing in the Group III state championship game by a score of 3-0 to Ramapo High School.

In 2008, the field hockey team won Holmdel, Jersey, Group II state sectional championship with a 2-1 win over Allentown High School in the tournament final.

In 2010, the boys soccer team won the NJSIAA Group III state championship, the program's first, with a 2-1 win over Chatham High School.

Holmdel won the boys Group II cross country state championships in 1994-95 and 2001, while the girls won the Group II title in 1982-84. The school's Rich Christenson was the individual champion in Group II in 1994. The boys cross country team also won the Group II state championship on November 12, 2011.
