In 332 BC Alexander the Great conquered Egypt with little resistance from the Persians. He was welcomed by the Egyptians as a deliverer. He visited Memphis, and went on pilgrimage to the oracle of Amun at the Oasis of Siwa. The oracle declared him to be the son of Amun-Re. He conciliated the Egyptians by the respect which he showed for their religion. While Macedonians commanded military garrisons, including at Memphis and Pelusium, Alexander left the civil administration in local control; initially there were two, later one governor. Alexander founded a new Greek city, Alexandria, to be a major commercial port. This city, where Alexander was buried, grew, quickly becoming as well Egypt's administrative capital and an intellectual centre.

Famous quotes containing the words the great, alexander the:
“In a town-meeting, the great secret of political science was uncovered, and the problem solved, how to give every individual his fair weight in the government, without any disorder from numbers. In a town-meeting, the roots of society were reached. Here the rich gave counsel, but the poor also; and moreover, the just and the unjust.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“We all end up living secret lives. We create what we are willing to admire and admiring what we shouldnt confess to the secret of our own sin, our own insufficiency, our own sadness. We all end up taking our secrets into the world and handing them over to strangers, only to realize its often too late to claim them back. The very nature of time passing is sad beyond words. Memories mean theyre gone.”
—Alexander Theroux (b. 1940)
