History
Hirosaki Station was opened on December 1, 1894 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways Ōu Northern Line, the predecessor to the Japan National Railways (JNR), established in 1909. On September 7, 1927, the Konan Railway also began operations at Hirosaki Station, and the station building was expanded and rebuilt in 1929. The station building was again reconstructed in 1981 to incorporate a shopping center. Scheduled freight operations were discontinued in 1986; however, the Japan Freight Railway Company resumed chartered high speed freight operations with 12-foot containers in 1995. With the privatization of the JNR on April 1, 1987, the station came under the operational control of JR East. A new station building was completed in December 2004.

“The custard is setting; meanwhile
I not only have my own history to worry about
But am forced to fret over insufficient details related to large
Unfinished concepts that can never bring themselves to the point
Of being, with or without my help, if any were forthcoming.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“Universal history is the history of a few metaphors.”
—Jorge Luis Borges (18991986)
“Gossip is charming! History is merely gossip. But scandal is gossip made tedious by morality.”
