In December 1983, his car collided with a jacknifing tractor-trailer on an icy highway (State Route 9 in Hyde Park, New York) and he died on January 2. Unification Church leader Chung Hwan Kwak stated: "A truck lost control as it approached the car Heung Jin Nim was driving.
