In ancient Greece, hetaerae (singular /hɪˈtaɪrə/, plural /hɪˈtaɪriː/; in Greek ἑταῖραι, hetairai) were courtesans—highly educated, sophisticated companions. Despite that most engaged in sexual relations with their patrons, hetaerae were not simple prostitutes.
