Death
Mankiewicz was a heavy drinker, once famously admonishing his hostess at a formal dinner in her home, after he'd vomited on her white tablecloth while dining, not to be concerned because "the white wine came up with the fish." He died of uremic poisoning at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles, California on March 5, 1953, the same day as Joseph Stalin and Sergei Prokofiev.

Famous quotes containing the word death:
“In accordance with the law the death sentence was announced to Cincinnatus C. in a whisper. All rose, exchanging smiles.”
—Vladimir Nabokov (18991977)
“I do not find
The Hanged Man. Fear death by water.
I see crowds of people, walking round in a ring.
Thank you.”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
“The techniques of opening conversation are universal. I knew long ago and rediscovered that the best way to attract attention, help, and conversation is to be lost. A man who seeing his mother starving to death on a path kicks her in the stomach to clear the way, will cheerfully devote several hours of his time giving wrong directions to a total stranger who claims to be lost.”
—John Steinbeck (19021968)
