The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is the statutory fire and rescue service covering Herefordshire and Worcestershire in the West Midlands region of England.
The service was created in 1974 when Herefordshire and Worcestershire were merged to create the county of Hereford and Worcester. The two counties were split up again in 1998 but the fire service remained, and is now run by a joint fire authority.
The Service covers an area of 3,908.59 km² with a population of 714,100. The service has 332 wholetime operational staff, 369 retained (part time) staff, 21 Fire Control staff, as well as about 98 non-uniformed support staff.
Famous quotes containing the words fire, rescue and/or service:
“Why I love the ancients so much? Aside from everything else, when I read them, the entire past between them and me unfolds at the same time. The hearts of how many heroes and poets may have been set on fire by Plutarchs biographies which now inspire me with their own and with borrowed flames!”
—Franz Grillparzer (17911872)
“The individual woman is required ... a thousand times a day to choose either to accept her appointed role and thereby rescue her good disposition out of the wreckage of her self-respect, or else follow an independent line of behavior and rescue her self-respect out of the wreckage of her good disposition.”
—Jeannette Rankin (18801973)
“The master class seldom lose a chance to insult a woman who has the ability for something besides service to his lordship.”
—Caroline Nichols Churchill (1833?)
