Herbert River - People and Land Use

People and Land Use

The catchment area holds a population of about 18,000, 75% of whom dwell in the lower flood plain area.

The river's upper region is used mainly for cattle grazing, while the lower Herbert River floodplain is given over to sugar cane production. The middle reaches of the catchment include National Parks, State Forests and sections of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Parts of the river, especially the Herbert River Gorge stretch, are used for kayaking and white water rafting.

Famous quotes containing the words people and/or land:

    If the aristocrat is only valid in fashionable circles, and not with truckmen, he will never be a leader in fashion; and if the man of the people cannot speak on equal terms with the gentleman, so that the gentleman shall perceive that he is already really of his own order, he is not to be feared.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    croppers rotting shacks
    with famine, terror, flood, and plague near by;
    where sentiment and hatred still held sway
    and only bitter land was washed away.
    Margaret Abigail Walker (b. 1915)
