Hemel Hospital Radio is a volunteer run hospital radio station, which broadcasts to the patients, staff, visitors and friends of Hemel Hempstead General Hospital and is staffed entirely by volunteers. The station is also licensed to broadcast on 1350 kHz.
The station was formed in 1979 and was originally an opt-out service of Watford Hospital Radio, fed from Watford General Hospital via a private music circuit provided by the hospital management. The service was received at the patients bedside and lounges via a 100v line system. The organisation aims to entertain the patients of Hemel Hempstead General Hospital during their stay and to provide a point of interaction between patients and their families and friends in Hemel Hempstead via its AM service and also by providing local news and entertainment stories and by attending events in the town and reporting back to its audience.
In 1999 the station applied for and was granted a AM LPAM licence to broadcast on 1350kHZ. In 2001, the station began to broadcast regular football match commantaries from Hemel Town FC at Vauxhall Road. Further community events were also broadcast live by the station by use of ISDN and radio links. These included Last Night at the Proms, HM Band of the Royal Marines, church services and other live events from the Marlowes shopping centre bandstand.
The station was also known for 3 years as City & Hemel Hospital Radio and also broadcast on 1287AM in St Albans and plans to reintroduce its St Albans service shortly, after ceasing in October 2005.
In 2005 there was a major split in the station management and as a result, long serving members including past Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Station Manager, Engineer, Licensee and others resigned.

Famous quotes containing the words hospital and/or radio:
“The church is a sort of hospital for mens souls, and as full of quackery as the hospital for their bodies. Those who are taken into it live like pensioners in their Retreat or Sailors Snug Harbor, where you may see a row of religious cripples sitting outside in sunny weather.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“A liberal is a socialist with a wife and two children.”
—Anonymous. BBC Radio 4 (April 8, 1990)
