Language Education

SYK highlights language education. 3rd graders begin with French, German or Russian as their first foreign language. In year five it is possible for them to start English. Two years later, 7th graders take on Swedish as the mandatory second domestic language. There is also a possibility to begin learning a fourth language in year eight (French, German or Russian). As well as fifth and/or sixth languages in high school.

Another special task the school has is to take in repatriating children, offering English teaching that matches their level and possibly giving special tutoring in Finnish or other subjects. Most of these children take French as their second language in year 5 instead of English.

Famous quotes containing the words language and/or education:

This is of the loon—I do not mean its laugh, but its looning,—is a long-drawn call, as it were, sometimes singularly human to my ear,—hoo-hoo-ooooo, like the hallooing of a man on a very high key, having thrown his voice into his head. I have heard a sound exactly like it when breathing heavily through my own nostrils, half awake at ten at night, suggesting my affinity to the loon; as if its language were but a dialect of my own, after all.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I think the most important education that we have is the education which now I am glad to say is being accepted as the proper one, and one which ought to be widely diffused, that industrial, vocational education which puts young men and women in a position from which they can by their own efforts work themselves to independence.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
