Music in Heimat

In the episode "The Happiest People in the World" (1989) of Heimat 3, Clarissa Lichtblau played by Salome Kammer sings aria, "When I am laid in earth", commonly known as "Dido's Lament" from the opera, Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell.

In the last episode of Heimat 3, "Farewell to Schabbach" (1999), Clarissa Lichtblau performs excerpts from two lied that belong to Wolfgang Rihm's cycle "Das Rot" (1990) - (No. 2 Ist alles stumm und leer and No. 1 Hochroth). The text is by the early romantic poet Karoline von Günderrode. Cycle's original orchestration was for voice and piano but here the excerpts are being performed by Clarissa on voice, clarinet, cello, vibraphone and Hermann Simon on piano.

Famous quotes containing the word music:

If music in general is an imitation of history, opera in particular is an imitation of human willfulness; it is rooted in the fact that we not only have feelings but insist upon having them at whatever cost to ourselves.... The quality common to all the great operatic roles, e.g., Don Giovanni, Norma, Lucia, Tristan, Isolde, Brünnhilde, is that each of them is a passionate and willful state of being. In real life they would all be bores, even Don Giovanni.
