Hartland opened in 1983, with Hartland Publications established in 1984. It has been accused of become increasingly critical of the Adventist church, claiming it has departed from past beliefs and practices. According to Gary Land, "by the end of the 20th century the institute was largely estranged from the denominational leadership."
Robert S. Folkenberg, General Conference president during the 1990s, accused Hartland of being critical of the church.
