Early History
Harris Technology was started by Ron Harris on 6 October 1986. After a trip to the USA, it became apparent that the IT Retail market in Australia would be receptive to a computer superstore. Harris Technology opened its first Superstore in North Sydney, under the Bayer Building (formerly Mann Building then Konika Building).
On 1 April 1999, Coles Myer acquired Harris Technology. Since then, Harris Technology expanded with business centres in five Australian states and a website including detailed information on more than 15,000 technology products (as of Aug 2006), and has become one of Australia’s major resellers of technology to small and medium businesses.
In late 2008 Harris Technology reduced the number of business centres it operated from 11 to 5 (one in each major capital), placing more focus on their direct retail channels (i.e.: phone, fax and internet orders).
In January 2012, the company again reduced the number of business centres, retaining only the Fortitude Valley and North Ryde locations. The former three business centres in Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT were replaced by order collection arrangements through nearby Officeworks stores.
