Hannibal Kimball - 1870 Agricultural Fair

1870 Agricultural Fair

In 1870, the city contracted Kimball to construct the grounds and buildings for an agricultural fair to be held that year. The project required over 60 acres (240,000 m2) of forest to be cleared and buildings constructed on the site. Six months later, Kimball completed the project and turned it over to the city and the State Agricultural Society. He was later contracted by the city to manage the fair.

In 1870 Kimball became a shareholder in the Georgia National Bank, which would fail a few years thereafter.

Famous quotes containing the word fair:

This fair homestead has fallen to us, and how little have we done to improve it, how little have we cleared and hedged and ditched! We are too inclined to go hence to a “better land,” without lifting a finger, as our farmers are moving to the Ohio soil; but would it not be more heroic and faithful to till and redeem this New England soil of the world?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
