Biography
In 200, Guan Yu concluded his short service under the warlord Cao Cao and bade farewell to the latter. He journeyed northward to reunite with his sworn brother Liu Bei, bringing along with him Liu's wives, whom he had been protecting all this while. In his hurry, Guan forgot to obtain an official pass from Cao and was challenged at Dongling Pass (south of present day Dengfeng, Henan) by Kong Xiu. Guan slew Kong and passed through until he reached Luoyang. Han had already heard of Kong Xiu's fate, so he discussed with his deputy Meng Tan (孟坦) on how to deal with Guan.
When Guan reached the city gate and failed to produce a pass, Meng rode forward to challenge him to a duel. Within three rounds, Meng turned around and sped towards the gate. However, Guan's steed, the Red Hare, was faster, and Guan caught up with Meng and killed him. Just as Guan pulled to a halt, Han, who was lying in ambush nearby, suddenly fired an arrow that hit Guan in the left arm. Guan pulled out the arrow with his mouth and galloped towards Han, who was attempting to flee. Guan caught up with him and killed him.

Famous quotes containing the word biography:
“A biography is like a handshake down the years, that can become an arm-wrestle.”
—Richard Holmes (b. 1945)
“As we approached the log house,... the projecting ends of the logs lapping over each other irregularly several feet at the corners gave it a very rich and picturesque look, far removed from the meanness of weather-boards. It was a very spacious, low building, about eighty feet long, with many large apartments ... a style of architecture not described by Vitruvius, I suspect, though possibly hinted at in the biography of Orpheus.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
