Gustav Nossal - Life and Career

Life and Career

Gustav Nossal's family was from Vienna, Austria. He was born four weeks prematurely in Bad Ischl while his mother was on holiday. When he was eight years old the family left their home town of Vienna for Australia because the Nazi Germany of Adolf Hitler had annexed Austria and Nossal's father was Jewish.

When he first attended his school in Australia, Nossal spoke no English but he graduated from St Aloysius' College in 1947 as the dux of the College. In 1948, he entered Sydney University's Medical School, graduating later with first class honours. At the age of 26, he left his job in Sydney and moved to Melbourne to work with Macfarlane Burnet in Medical Science at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and gained his PhD degree in 1960.

Famous quotes containing the words life and/or career:

It’s not the men in my life, but the life in my men.
    Mae West (1892–1980)

A black boxer’s career is the perfect metaphor for the career of a black male. Every day is like being in the gym, sparring with impersonal opponents as one faces the rudeness and hostility that a black male must confront in the United States, where he is the object of both fear and fascination.
    Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
