Famous quotes containing the word history:

“A poet’s object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.”
    —Aristotle (384–323 B.C.)

“The true theater of history is therefore the temperate zone.”
    —Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

“The history of any nation follows an undulatory course. In the trough of the wave we find more or less complete anarchy; but the crest is not more or less complete Utopia, but only, at best, a tolerably humane, partially free and fairly just society that invariably carries within itself the seeds of its own decadence.”
    —Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
