Political Divisions
Guanacaste is subdivided into eleven cantons. The cantons (with their capitals in parentheses) are:
- Liberia (Liberia)
- Nicoya (Nicoya)
- Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz)
- Bagaces (Bagaces)
- Carrillo (Filadelfia)
- Cañas (Cañas)
- Abangares (Las Juntas)
- Tilarán (Tilarán)
- Nandayure (Carmona)
- La Cruz (La Cruz)
- Hojancha (Hojancha)
A major portion of the peninsula of Nicoya is now under the jurisdiction of the province of Puntarenas. This may change in the future, as there is constant debate over the remapping of the area.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or divisions:
“How does it become a man to behave toward this American government to-day? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slaves government also.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“I find myself ... hoping a total end of all the unhappy divisions of mankind by party-spirit, which at best is but the madness of many for the gain of a few.”
—Alexander Pope (16881744)
