Group Identifier - Primary Vs. Supplementary

Primary Vs. Supplementary

In Unix systems, every user must be a member of at least one group, which is identified by the numeric GID of the user's entry in /etc/passwd. This group is referred to as the primary group ID. A user may be listed as member of additional groups in the relevant entries in the /etc/group; the IDs of these groups are referred to as supplementary group IDs.

Famous quotes containing the word primary:

Without the Constitution and the Union, we could not have attained the result; but even these, are not the primary cause of our great prosperity. There is something back of these, entwining itself more closely about the human heart. That something, is the principle of “Liberty to all”Mthe principle that clears the path for all—gives hope to all—and, by consequence, enterprize [sic], and industry to all.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)
