List
Between the Napoleonic Wars and World War I there were several grand duchies in Europe. A considerable number of grand duchies were created in the Napoleonic era, and later following the Congress of Vienna and the foundation of the German Confederation.
- The Grand Duchy of Tuscany (1569-1860, part of Italy afterwards)
- The Grand Duchy of Berg (1806-1813, part of Prussia afterwards)
- The Grand Duchy of Würzburg (1806-1814, part of Bavaria afterwards)
- The Grand Duchy of Baden (1806-1918, part of the German Empire since 1871)
- The Grand Duchy of Hesse (1806-1918, part of the German Empire since 1871)
- The Grand Duchy of Fulda (1816-1866) part of the Electorate of Hesse
- The Grand Duchy of Finland (correctly translated as Grand Principality, 1809-1917 in Personal Union with Russia, Republic since 1917)
- The Grand Duchy of Frankfurt (1810-1813, part of several German states afterwards)
- The Grand Duchy of the Lower Rhine (1815-1822 as part of Prussia)
- The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (since 1815, in Personal Union with the Netherlands until 1890)
- The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1815-1918, part of the German Empire since 1871)
- The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1815-1918, part of the German Empire since 1871)
- The Grand Duchy of Posen (1815-1848 as part of Prussia, "Großherzogtum Posen")

- The Grand Duchy of Cracow (1846-1918 in Personal Union with Austria, part of Poland, "Großherzogtum Krakau")
The term "grand duchy" is often, but incorrectly, used in reference to the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-1813), which was in fact a duchy and not a grand duchy.
Two others jurisdictions often incorrectly labelled "grand duchy" are:
- Grand Duchy of Lithuania (correctly a grand principality, ruth.: "Великое князство Литовского")
- Grand Duchy of Moscow (correctly a grand principality, russ.: "Великое Княжество Московское")
- Grand Duchy of Kiev (correctly a grand principality, russ.: "Великое Княжество Киевское")
- Grand Duchy of Ryazan (correctly a grand principality, russ.: "Великое Княжество Рязанское")
- Grand Duchy of Rus (correctly a grand principality, russ.: "Великое Княжество Русское")

Famous quotes containing the word list:
“Do your children view themselves as successes or failures? Are they being encouraged to be inquisitive or passive? Are they afraid to challenge authority and to question assumptions? Do they feel comfortable adapting to change? Are they easily discouraged if they cannot arrive at a solution to a problem? The answers to those questions will give you a better appraisal of their education than any list of courses, grades, or test scores.”
—Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
“I am opposed to writing about the private lives of living authors and psychoanalyzing them while they are alive. Criticism is getting all mixed up with a combination of the Junior F.B.I.- men, discards from Freud and Jung and a sort of Columnist peep- hole and missing laundry list school.... Every young English professor sees gold in them dirty sheets now. Imagine what they can do with the soiled sheets of four legal beds by the same writer and you can see why their tongues are slavering.”
—Ernest Hemingway (18991961)
“Loves boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and its useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.”
—Vladimir Mayakovsky (18931930)
