Legal Meaning
The Grand Divisions are defined in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 4, Chapter 1, Part 2, Grand Divisions and State Capital.
The Tennessee State Constitution mandates that no more than two of the five Justices on the state's Supreme Court can be from any one Division to help keep the court free from geographic bias. The court must also meet regularly in each Division. The Supreme Court currently meets in Jackson, which lies in West Tennessee, Nashville, which is located in Middle Tennessee, and Knoxville, which is situated in East Tennessee. Similar rules apply to some other state institutions such as the former Tennessee Public Service Commission, of whom one commissioner was required to be from each Grand Division, although the commissioners were elected statewide.

Famous quotes containing the words legal and/or meaning:
“If he who breaks the law is not punished, he who obeys it is cheated. This, and this alone, is why lawbreakers ought to be punished: to authenticate as good, and to encourage as useful, law-abiding behavior. The aim of criminal law cannot be correction or deterrence; it can only be the maintenance of the legal order.”
—Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)
“The haiku lets meaning float; the aphorism pins it down.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
