Grade Crossing Predictor

Grade Crossing Signals are the warning devices for road vehicles at railroad grade crossings. The basic signal consists of two sets of flashing red lights, one on the front and one on the back, a sign that says Railroad Crossing, and a bell. At crossings where trains travel at 30 mph. or more, there will be a gate added to the signal. At most crossings, the signals will activate about 30 seconds before the train arrives. The gates will be fully lowered 15–20 seconds before the train arrives. The gates will rise or the signals will shut off once the end of the train clears the island circuit. The time interval may be controlled by a Grade crossing predictor.

Famous quotes containing the words grade and/or crossing:

Ideas are like pizza dough, made to be tossed around, and nearly every book represents what my son’s third grade teacher refers to as a “teachable moment.”
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

This, my first [bicycle] had an intrinsic beauty. And it opened for me an era of all but flying, which roads emptily crossing the airy, gold-gorsy Common enhanced. Nothing since has equalled that birdlike freedom.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)
