Gotland University College (Swedish: Högskolan på Gotland) is a university college (högskola) located in Visby on Gotland, Sweden. The school is not a full university according to the official Swedish terminology since it is not authorized to issue PhD degrees. In December 2011 a "declaration of interest" to merge into Uppsala University was signed by both vice-chancellors, aiming for completion during 2012.
The university college was established in 1998 and is thus one of the youngest institutions of higher education in Sweden. It has around 4 300 registered students, many of them part-time and distance students. The main building which used to be an old Whiskey distillery is located in the central part of Visby, between the city marina and the Almedalen park. The Rindi Student Union, which organises the students, has its own building, called Rindi-borgen.

Famous quotes containing the words university and/or college:
“One can describe a landscape in many different words and sentences, but one would not normally cut up a picture of a landscape and rearrange it in different patterns in order to describe it in different ways. Because a photograph is not composed of discrete units strung out in a linear row of meaningful pieces, we do not understand it by looking at one element after another in a set sequence. The photograph is understood in one act of seeing; it is perceived in a gestalt.”
—Joshua Meyrowitz, U.S. educator, media critic. The Blurring of Public and Private Behaviors, No Sense of Place: The Impact of Electronic Media on Social Behavior, Oxford University Press (1985)
“The mode of founding a college is, commonly, to get up a subscription of dollars and cents, and then, following blindly the principles of a division of labor to its extreme,a principle which should never be followed but with circumspection,to call in a contractor who makes this a subject of speculation,... and for these oversights successive generations have to pay.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
