The video was shot by Mark Romanek in Los Angeles. It takes place during the time of apartheid in South Africa and Jackson portrays a lounge singer. Inspired by a blend of '60s and '70s African and African American cultures, including the work of Malick Sidibé, the video depicts people free and having a good time living life. Joni Mitchell, the featured artist of the song, only appeared on the TV at the starting of the video. Supermodel Alek Wek appeared in the video. It won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. The video is featured on the limited bonus-DVD edition of 2001's All for You as well as the 2004 video compilation From janet. to Damita Jo: The Videos. In 2003, it was named one of the 100 Greatest Music Videos of all time by Slant Magazine, ranked at number 10.
