Flare Effect and Downregulation
Agonists do not quickly dissociate from the GnRH receptor. As a result initially there is an increase in FSH and LH secretion (so-called "flare effect").
However after about ten days a profound hypogonadal effect (i.e. decrease in FSH and LH) is achieved through receptor downregulation by internalization of receptors. Generally this induced and reversible hypogonadism is the therapeutic goal.

Famous quotes containing the words flare and/or effect:
“Girls blush, sometimes, because they are alive,
Half wishing they were dead to save the shame.
The sudden blush devours them, neck and brow;
They have drawn too near the fire of life, like gnats,
And flare up bodily, wings and all. What then?
Whos sorry for a gnat ... or girl?”
—Elizabeth Barrett Browning (18061861)
“The pleasure of ones effect on other people still exists in agewhats called making a hit. But the hit is much rarer and made of different stuff.”
—Enid Bagnold (18891981)
