Front Wheel Drive
The front-wheel drive X-body was used for compact cars from 1980 to 1985. They were among the first mainstream front-wheel drive models introduced into the North American market, and initially saw great sales success, and were an alternative to imported front-wheel drive sedans like the Toyota Camry, Nissan Stanza, Honda Accord, and the Volkswagen Quantum. However, the X-body developed a poor reputation for quality, with a large number of safety recalls and eventually an unsuccessful U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lawsuit.
The FWD GM A-body was derived from the X-body, but did not suffer the same reputation issues.
Vehicles using the X-body include:
- 1980–1985 Buick Skylark
- 1980–1985 Chevrolet Citation
- 1980–1984 Oldsmobile Omega
- 1980–1984 Pontiac Phoenix
The X platform was replaced by the L-body and N-body platforms, which were derived from the J-body platform.

Famous quotes containing the words front, wheel and/or drive:
“The front aspect of great thoughts can only be enjoyed by those who stand on the side whence they arrive.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Helpless, unknown, and unremembered, most human beings, however sensitive, idealistic, intelligent, go through life as passengers rather than chauffeurs. Although we may pretend that it is the chauffeur who is the social inferior ... most of us, like Toad of Toad Hall, would not mind a turn at the wheel ourselves.”
—Ralph Harper (b. 1915)
“Signal smokes, war drums, feathered bonnets against the western sky. New messiahs, young leaders are ready to hurl the finest light cavalry in the world against Fort Stark. In the Kiowa village, the beat of drums echoes in the pulsebeat of the young braves. Fighters under a common banner, old quarrels forgotten, Comanche rides with Arapaho, Apache with Cheyenne. All chant of war. War to drive the white man forever from the red mans hunting ground.”
—Frank S. Nugent (19081965)
