Glen Shiel - Roads

Roads

The A87 Road to the Isles runs the full length of the glen, reaching a high point of 271 metres two miles west of the Cluanie Inn. The remnants of the military road connecting Fort Augustus to the Bernera barracks in Glenelg built between 1750 and 1784 by William Caulfeild, the successor to General Wade, can be seen a quarter of a mile west of the Cluanie Inn.

Famous quotes containing the word roads:

There are three roads to ruin; women, gambling and technicians. The most pleasant is with women, the quickest is with gambling, but the surest is with technicians.
    Georges Pompidou (1911–1974)

This, my first [bicycle] had an intrinsic beauty. And it opened for me an era of all but flying, which roads emptily crossing the airy, gold-gorsy Common enhanced. Nothing since has equalled that birdlike freedom.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)

Pioneers lay the roads for those who follow to walk on.
    Chinese proverb.
