Glasgow University Students' Representative Council

Glasgow University Students' Representative Council was founded on 9 March 1886 and recognised as the legal representative body for students of the University of Glasgow by the Universities (Scotland) Act 1889. The SRC is responsible for representing students' interests to the management of the University and to local and national government, and for health and welfare issues. Under the Universities (Scotland) Acts, all students of the University automatically become members of the SRC, however they are entitled to opt out of this. Unlike at other Scottish universities, the SRC plays a limited role in the social lives of students, those being the purview of the Glasgow University Union (GUU) and the Queen Margaret Union (QMU), although it does organise RAG (Raising And Giving) Week and SHaG (Sexual Health at Glasgow) Week, as well as funding some one hundred clubs and societies. Since 1968, all of the SRC's offices have been located in the John McIntyre Building on University Avenue.

Famous quotes containing the words glasgow, university and/or council:

Apart from letters, it is the vulgar custom of the moment to deride the thinkers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras; yet there has not been, in all history, another age ... when so much sheer mental energy was directed toward creating a fairer social order.
    —Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945)

To get a man soundly saved it is not enough to put on him a pair of new breeches, to give him regular work, or even to give him a University education. These things are all outside a man, and if the inside remains unchanged you have wasted your labour. You must in some way or other graft upon the man’s nature a new nature, which has in it the element of the Divine.
    William Booth (1829–1912)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
