German Australian - German Australian Culture

German Australian Culture

There is a German Ethnic Club in each Australian State capital and a number of German restaurants in each major city, ranging from Imbiss-style sausage and snack food bars through to full restaurants. Currywurst is becoming increasingly popular in Australia.

The most Germanic parts of Australia are South Australia (particularly the Barossa Valley region) and Queensland's Sunshine Coast hinterland. An Oktoberfest event is held in Queensland's capital, Brisbane, each year.

In Tasmania, most of the German immigrants settled in the farming district of Bismark (renamed Collinsvale during the First World War.)

German popular music, opera and novels have not made an impact on Australian culture but SBS screens German films and television programmes on a weekly basis for immigrants and Australians of German descent wishing to reconnect with their cultural heritage.

The Lutheran Church of Australia is present in each State but is strongest in South Australia and Queensland. There are a number of Lutheran-run high schools in these two States.

The Goethe-Institut is active in Australia. It has branches in Melbourne and Sydney.

Famous quotes containing the words german, australian and/or culture:

She had exactly the German way: whatever was in her mind to be delivered, whether a mere remark, or a sermon, or a cyclopedia, or the history of a war, she would get it into a single sentence or die. Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him till he emerges on the other side of the Atlantic with his verb in his mouth.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

Beyond the horizon, or even the knowledge, of the cities along the coast, a great, creative impulse is at work—the only thing, after all, that gives this continent meaning and a guarantee of the future. Every Australian ought to climb up here, once in a way, and glimpse the various, manifold life of which he is a part.
    Vance Palmer (1885–1959)

Letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend is the policy for promoting the progress of the arts and the sciences and a flourishing culture in our land.
    Mao Zedong (1893–1976)
