Family

In 1833, Combe married Cecilia Siddons, a daughter of the actress Sarah Siddons, and sister of Henry Siddons, the author of the Practical Illustrations of Rhetorical Gesture and Action (1807). She brought him a fortune, as well as a happy marriage (preceded by a phrenological check for compatibility); a few years later he retired from work as a lawyer, in comfortable circumstances.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

If you have this enormous talent, it’s got you by the balls, it’s a demon. You can’t be a family man and a husband and a caring person and be that animal. Dickens wasn’t that nice a guy.
    Dustin Hoffman (b. 1937)

Diamonds may have been a girl’s best friend in an era when a woman’s only hope of having a high family income was to marry a man who was well-off, but today, marketable skills that will enable a woman to command a good income over her lifetime are a better investment.
    Grace Baruch (20th century)

Respectable means rich, and decent means poor. I should die if I heard my family called decent.
    Thomas Love Peacock (1785–1866)
