George A. Cowles - California Southern Railroad

California Southern Railroad

Additionally, as a director of the California Southern Railroad (later a part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway), he was responsible for extending the railroad from San Diego's 22nd Street Station into the north end of El Cajon valley, including giving free right of way through his own property. The Red Car trolley now runs on these tracks, and Highway 67 utilizes some of the right of way as it turns east from Santee.

Famous quotes containing the words california, southern and/or railroad:

I can’t earn my own living. I could never make anything turn into money. It’s like making fires. A careful assortment of paper, shavings, faggots and kindling nicely tipped with pitch will never light for me. I have never been present when a cigarette butt, extinct, thrown into a damp and isolated spot, started a conflagration in the California woods.
    Margaret Anderson (1886–1973)

The Great South Beach of Long Island,... though wild and desolate, as it wants the bold bank,... possesses but half the grandeur of Cape Cod in my eyes, nor is the imagination contented with its southern aspect.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

People who make puns are like wanton boys that put coppers on the railroad tracks. They amuse themselves and other children, but their little trick may upset a freight train of conversation for the sake of a battered witticism.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)
