Geographic Coordinate System - UTM and UPS Systems

UTM and UPS Systems

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) coordinate systems both use a metric-based cartesian grid laid out on a conformally projected surface to locate positions on the surface of the Earth. The UTM system is not a single map projection but a series of map projections, one for each of sixty 6-degree bands of longitude. The UPS system is used for the polar regions, which are not covered by the UTM system.

Famous quotes containing the words ups and/or systems:

I reckon a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight place, is taking considerable many resks; though I ain’t had no experience, and can’t say for certain.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

The only people who treasure systems are those whom the whole truth evades, who want to catch it by the tail. A system is just like truth’s tail, but the truth is like a lizard. It will leave the tail in your hand and escape; it knows that it will soon grow another tail.
    Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818–1883)
