Genesis 1:1 is the first Bible verse of the first chapter in the Book of Genesis of the Hebrew Bible. The verse opens the Genesis creation narrative in Hebrew with: בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָֽרֶץ (Bereishit bara Elohim et hashamayim ve'et ha'aretz). Translated into English it reads: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Genesis 1:1). The verse's translation and interpretation are of major theological significance in developing the concept that God created the universe out of nothing (creation ex nihilo).

“If only he would not pity us so much,
Weaken our fate, relieve us of woe both great
And small, a constant fellow of destiny,
A too, too human god, self-pitys kin
And uncourageous genesis . . .”
